How do you get to work?

Photo journals from around the world showing the cyclist’s commute.

Velorution points readers to a photo essay of a Beijing commute - very cool.

A photo from the Beijing commute series

This put me in mind of other commute route photo journals I’ve seen, so I set out to find them again. Of course I didn’t find the ones I’ve seen before but I did find quite a few others including:

Vancouver (2001)

Two routes by Derek K. Miller: Burnaby to Richmond and Burnaby to Downtown

Colorado (2005?)

Ryan’s Longmont Bicycle Commute.

Princeton (2004)

Ed Groth’s Commute to Work at Princeton University.

Redmond (2005)

Found via cycleicious, The Best Part of the Day shows how a commute route in the USA state of Washington changes over the course of a year. I dips me lid to those who commute through snow.

San Francisco (2005)

Phil Aro shows how he goes Bicycling to Work - sweet combination of helmet cam, photos, and aerials views with great commentary. Phil, you can keep this route! Anyway, I reckon we’ll be seeing more of these.

location unknown (2004)

I don’t know where this is and it’s only one photo but yes, words utterly fail to describe this commute.

the Beijing commute is great! I was lucky enough to stay 2 weeks in Beijing in the mid 80s. Sadly, the proportion of bikes to cars seems to have changed dramatically in favour of the latter, but the big wide streets and lack of hills still make it a perfect cycling city - if you can breathe!
My father in law worked at the Australian Embassy and for work reasons, often had to drive. The mad placement of barriers and median strips where he lived meant that he had no choice but to drive the wrong way down a one way bicycle lane to get to work. No-one ever got angry - he’d just toot his horn as politely as possible and smile and the bicycles would just go around him. It was a crack-up!
